Cryptocoryne alba is a rare and unique species of aquarium plant from the genus Cryptocoryne, which is highly valued in the aquatic plant hobby for its distinctive appearance and ease of care.
Appearance: Cryptocoryne alba has broad, lance-shaped leaves that can vary in color, but it typically has green leaves with a slight reddish or brownish tint. The plant's overall appearance is quite attractive, making it a great addition to aquariums.
Size: It can grow to a moderate height of around 8-12 inches (20-30 cm), depending on the growing conditions. This makes it suitable for both foreground and midground placement in aquariums.
Growth Rate: Cryptocoryne alba is a slow-growing plant, which is typical for most Cryptocoryne species. However, once it establishes itself in the tank, it will grow steadily.
Lighting: This species does well under low to medium light conditions. Too much direct lighting can cause algae problems, so moderate lighting is ideal to maintain healthy growth.
Water Conditions: Like many Cryptocoryne species, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of about 6.0-7.5. Water hardness should be on the softer side, ideally between 2-10 dGH. Temperature-wise, Cryptocoryne alba thrives in the range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).
Substrate: It grows well in a nutrient-rich substrate. While Cryptocoryne plants do not require highly specific soil types, a substrate rich in iron and other trace elements will encourage better growth.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Too strong a current can uproot the plant or damage its delicate leaves, while stagnant water might hinder its growth.
Algae Control: Like most aquarium plants, Cryptocoryne alba can attract algae if the tank’s lighting and water parameters are not balanced. Regular pruning of the plant can help avoid algae growth and keep the plant looking healthy.
Crypt Melt: One thing to be aware of is the phenomenon called "Crypt melt," which can occur when you introduce a Cryptocoryne plant into a new tank or change its conditions. The leaves may melt or die off temporarily, but the plant typically recovers by growing new leaves once it acclimates to its environment.
Cryptocoryne alba, like other Cryptocoryne species, propagates by sending out runners. New plants will grow from these runners and can be separated and replanted. Be sure to wait until the new plants are strong enough to handle transplantation before removing them.
Cryptocoryne alba is peaceful and works well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. It’s a great plant for aquascaping and can be combined with other aquatic plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Cryptocoryne wendtii. Fish species that don’t uproot plants, like tetras, guppies, or peaceful cichlids, are ideal tankmates.
