  • Pair ( Male and Female)

The Blue Ram (scientifically known as Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), also referred to as the Ramirezi Cichlid, is a popular species of freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. It's a small, vibrant, and colorful cichlid with a peaceful temperament, making it ideal for community tanks. There are two primary color forms of this species: the classic Blue Ram and the Golden Ram (a golden morph).

Key Features of the Blue Ram:

  • Coloration: The Blue Ram is renowned for its striking colors. It has a shimmering blue body with hints of purple, yellow, and red around the fins and face. The bright blue coloration is one of the primary reasons it's so popular among aquarium enthusiasts.

  • Size: These fish are small, typically growing to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.

  • Temperament: Blue Rams are relatively peaceful and do well in community tanks, but they are best kept with similarly peaceful species. They may display territorial behavior during breeding but are not overly aggressive.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Blue Rams thrive in soft, slightly acidic water. Ideal conditions are:

    • pH: 5.5 - 7.5

    • Temperature: 78-85°F (25-29°C)

    • Hardness: Soft to moderate (less than 10 dGH)

  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hiding spots, such as plants, rocks, and caves. Blue Rams also enjoy aquariums with a well-established environment with good water quality.

  • Diet: These fish are omnivorous, meaning they will eat both plant and animal matter. A balanced diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp is ideal.

Breeding:

Blue Rams are relatively easy to breed in captivity, and they are known to be excellent parents. They will lay their eggs on flat surfaces like rocks or aquarium glass. After hatching, both parents often take turns guarding and caring for the fry.

Important Notes:

  • Water Quality: These fish are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in water parameters. Regular water changes and filtration are essential for their well-being.

  • Social Structure: They do well in small groups of their kind but can also live in a peaceful community tank with species that share similar care needs.

If you're considering keeping a Blue Ram, remember that they do best in stable, well-maintained aquariums. They're a great choice for those who want a vibrant, peaceful fish with a bit of personality in their tank!
