A bio sponge filter is a simple aquarium filter that uses a porous sponge to grow beneficial bacteria and clean the water. It works with an air pump that pulls water through the sponge while producing bubbles.
Air pump pushes air through a tube in the filter.
The rising bubbles pull water through the sponge.
The sponge traps debris (mechanical filtration).
Beneficial bacteria grow in the sponge and break down toxic waste like ammonia (biological filtration).
The sponge provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria. These bacteria convert:
Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
This process is the aquarium nitrogen cycle, which keeps fish safe.
✔ Very cheap and durable
✔ Excellent biological filtration
✔ Safe for shrimp and baby fish (fry)
✔ Gentle water flow
✔ Easy to clean
✖ Not very strong mechanical filtration
✖ Needs an air pump
✖ Visible inside the tank (less aesthetic)
Betta tanks
Shrimp tanks
Breeding tanks
Small aquariums
Quarantine tanks
Remove the sponge.
Rinse it in old tank water (not tap water).
⚠️ Using tap water can kill beneficial bacteria.
Squeeze gently to remove dirt.
Put it back.
